2 One shall be born, on whom the spirit of the Lord will rest; a spirit wise and discerning, a spirit prudent and strong, a spirit of knowledge and of piety,[1] 3 and ever fear of the Lord shall fill his heart. Not his to judge by appearances, listen to rumours when he makes award; 4 here is judgement will give the poor redress, here is award will right the wrongs of the defenceless. Word of him shall smite the earth like a rod, breath of him destroy the ill-doer; 5 love of right shall be the baldric he wears, faithfulness the strength that girds him. 6 Wolf shall live at peace with lamb, leopard take its ease with kid; calf and lion and sheep in one dwelling-place, with a little child to herd them! 7 Cattle and bears all at pasture, their young ones lying down together, lion eating straw like ox; 8 child new-weaned, fresh from its mother’s arms, playing by asp’s hole, putting hand in viper’s den! 9 All over this mountain, my sanctuary, no hurt shall be done, no life taken. Deep as the waters that hide the sea-floor, knowledge of the Lord overspreading the world! 1

Et egredietur virga de radice Jesse,
et flos de radice ejus ascendet.
2
Et requiescet super eum spiritus Domini:
spiritus sapientiæ et intellectus,
spiritus consilii et fortitudinis,
spiritus scientiæ et pietatis;
3
et replebit eum spiritus timoris Domini.
Non secundum visionem oculorum judicabit,
neque secundum auditum aurium arguet;
4
sed judicabit in justitia pauperes,
et arguet in æquitate pro mansuetis terræ;
et percutiet terram virga oris sui,
et spiritu labiorum suorum interficiet impium.
5
Et erit justitia cingulum lumborum ejus,
et fides cinctorium renum ejus.
6
Habitabit lupus cum agno,
et pardus cum hædo accubabit;
vitulus, et leo, et ovis, simul morabuntur,
et puer parvulus minabit eos.
7
Vitulus et ursus pascentur,
simul requiescent catuli eorum;
et leo quasi bos comedet paleas.
8
Et delectabitur infans ab ubere super foramine aspidis;
et in caverna reguli
qui ablactatus fuerit manum suam mittet.
9
Non nocebunt, et non occident
in universo monte sancto meo,
quia repleta est terra scientia Domini, sicut aquæ maris operientes.
10 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἡ ῥίζα τοῦ Ιεσσαι καὶ ὁ ἀνιστάμενος ἄρχειν ἐθνῶν ἐ{P'} αὐτῷ ἔθνη ἐλπιοῦσιν καὶ ἔσται ἡ ἀνάπαυσις αὐτοῦ τιμή 11 καὶ ἔσται τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ προσθήσει κύριος τοῦ δεῖξαι τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ τοῦ ζηλῶσαι τὸ καταλειφθὲν ὑπόλοιπον τοῦ λαοῦ ὃ ἂν καταλειφθῇ ἀπὸ τῶν Ἀσσυρίων καὶ ἀπὸ Αἰγύπτου καὶ Βαβυλωνίας καὶ Αἰθιοπίας καὶ ἀπὸ Αιλαμιτῶν καὶ ἀπὸ ἡλίου ἀνατολῶν καὶ ἐξ Ἀραβίας 12 καὶ ἀρεῖ σημεῖον εἰς τὰ ἔθνη καὶ συνάξει τοὺς ἀπολομένους Ισραηλ καὶ τοὺς διεσπαρμένους τοῦ Ιουδα συνάξει ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων πτερύγων τῆς γῆς 13 καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσεται ὁ ζῆλος Εφραιμ καὶ οἱ ἐχθροὶ Ιουδα ἀπολοῦνται Εφραιμ οὐ ζηλώσει Ιουδαν καὶ Ιουδας οὐ θλίψει Εφραιμ 14 καὶ πετασθήσονται ἐν πλοίοις ἀλλοφύλων θάλασσαν ἅμα προνομεύσουσιν καὶ τοὺς ἀ{F'} ἡλίου ἀνατολῶν καὶ Ιδουμαίαν καὶ ἐπὶ Μωαβ πρῶτον τὰς χεῖρας ἐπιβαλοῦσιν οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ Αμμων πρῶτοι ὑπακούσονται 15 καὶ ἐρημώσει κύριος τὴν θάλασσαν Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἐπιβαλεῖ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν ποταμὸν πνεύματι βιαίῳ καὶ πατάξει ἑπτὰ φάραγγας ὥστε διαπορεύεσθαι αὐτὸν ἐν ὑποδήμασιν 16 καὶ ἔσται δίοδος τῷ καταλειφθέντι μου λαῷ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ ἔσται τῷ Ισραηλ ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα ὅτε ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου 10 There he stands, fresh root from Jesse’s stem, signal beckoning to the peoples all around; the Gentiles will come to pay their homage, where he rests in glory.[2] 11 Then, once again, the Lord’s hand at work! From Assyria, from Egypt, Pathros and Ethiopia, from Elam and Sennaar, from Emath, from the islands out at sea, his people, a scattered remnant, shall return. 12 High lifted, for a world to see it, the standard that shall call Israel home, gather in the exiled sons of Juda from the four corners of the earth. 13 Gone, Ephraim’s envious looks, vanished away Juda’s enemies; Ephraim shall hate Juda, Juda harry Ephraim, no more. 14 Together they will sweep down on Philistia’s neck, there by the western sea; plunder the children of the east, Edom and Moab in their grasp, the sons of Ammon pliant to their will. 15 And the Lord will make a desert out of the tongue of sea that flanks Egypt; with the blast of his breath he will threaten Euphrates, dividing it into seven streams, that a man can cross dry-shod. 16 And so the remnant of my people which is left among the Assyrians will find a path made for it, as a path was made for it when it came up out of Egypt, long ago. 10

In die illa radix Jesse,
qui stat in signum populorum,
ipsum gentes deprecabuntur,
et erit sepulchrum ejus gloriosum.
11
Et erit in die illa: adjiciet Dominus secundo manum suam
ad possidendum residuum populi sui,
quod relinquetur ab Assyriis, et ab Ægypto,
et a Phetros, et ab Æthiopia, et ab Ælam, et a Sennaar,
et ab Emath, et ab insulis maris.
12
Et levabit signum in nationes,
et congregabit profugos Israël,
et dispersos Juda colliget
a quatuor plagis terræ.
13
Et auferetur zelus Ephraim,
et hostes Juda peribunt;
Ephraim non æmulabitur Judam,
et Judas non pugnabit contra Ephraim.
14
Et volabunt in humeros Philisthiim per mare,
simul prædabuntur filios orientis;
Idumæa et Moab præceptum manus eorum,
et filii Ammon obedientes erunt.
15
Et desolabit Dominus linguam maris Ægypti,
et levabit manum suam super flumen in fortitudine spiritus sui;
et percutiet eum in septem rivis,
ita ut transeant per eum calceati.
16
Et erit via residuo populo meo
qui relinquetur ab Assyriis,
sicut fuit Israëli
in die illa qua ascendit de terra Ægypti.
